If you were a police officer, and you had heard your fellow officers being trashed by one of the major political parties in the country for the better part of two months, would you be motivated to protect those same people? Would your sworn duty to protect people and uphold the law be enough to convince you to do a job for a group that hates you? This is the dilemma that police departments in Wisconsin are grappling with as we speak. Right now, various departments are deciding if they will provide their services at the Democrat National Convention in Milwaukee next month…and thanks to the rise in the “defund the police” rhetoric of the Democrats, many officers are content to let the DNC fend for itself.
So far, 100 police departments have said no to the requests for a police presence. According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, “At least 100 law enforcement agencies have withdrawn agreements to send personnel to next month’s Democratic National Convention, some of them citing orders to Milwaukee’s police chief to cease the use of tear gas and pepper spray during demonstrations…
The withdrawals cast doubt on a program to bring about 1,000 police officers from outside agencies to help shore up security for the event, scheduled for the week of Aug 17…
The action by Lamb and others comes as Milwaukee’s Fire and Police Commission issued a directive last week to Milwaukee Police Chief Alfonso Morales to change department policy to discontinue the use of tear gas and pepper spray.”
The police association in Wisconsin wrote the following statement:
“In this particular case, we strongly disagree with the actions they’ve taken. We believe [that] in removing those tools, the use of chemical irritants or pepper spray, from the available resources that the law enforcement officers would have at their disposal if protests become non-peaceful would severely compromise the safety of the public and also the safety of the law enforcement officers who would be assigned to protect the DNC.”
This is what happens when a Democratic city council like the one in Milwaukee takes defensive weapons away from those entrusted with the defense of civil society. Who could blame them for wanting to stay home when they are left defenseless against thousands of hooligans who no doubt will descend on Milwaukee during the convention? It could be a scene reminiscent of the violence that took place during the 1968 Democrat National Convention in Chicago.
I never could have imagined that in my lifetime—or in the lifetime of any generation, for that matter—there would be a full-on effort to defund and dismantle law enforcement in this country. Even more unbelievable is the fact that one of the country’s main political parties is spearheading the effort and making it a mainstream movement.
Police officers are brave individuals who go to work every day not knowing with certainty that they will return to their families after their shift. They do this so that all law-abiding citizens are protected and the rule of law as enshrined in the Constitution is protected. And this is how the Democrats treat them? Disgraceful.
If the Democrats want to defund the police, then they should get rid of their security details and disband the Capitol Hill Police. If all officers are so corrupt and racist, then Democrats clearly don’t need them around for protection. In fact, they’d probably be safer without them.
It is poetic justice that the DNC in Milwaukee is losing the protection of 100 police departments. Hopefully, no police departments show up until the Democratic Party changes its tune and vows to support law enforcement. I wouldn’t hold my breath, though.
