Tiger Woods is having a good year. Last month he completed arguably the greatest comeback in American sports history by winning the Masters.
Now he has been awarded another prize: The Presidential Medal of Freedom.
Last month, President Trump announced on Twitter that he would be giving Woods the award. The president tweeted: “Spoke to @TigerWoods to congratulate him on the great victory he had in yesterday’s @TheMasters, & to inform him that because of his incredible Success & Comeback in Sports(Golf) and, more importantly, LIFE, I will be presenting him with the PRESIDENTIAL
MEDAL OF FREEDOM!”
This is a tremendous honor. The list of past recipients includes John F. Kennedy, Paul Harvey, John Wayne, Betty Ford and Muhammad Ali.
On Monday, at the White House Rose Garden, Trump awarded Woods the medal. The president honored Tiger’s career achievements and acknowledged his incredible comeback story.
Trump fastened the medal around Tiger’s neck, then Tiger addressed those in attendance. He thanked the president and said, “I’ve battled. I’ve tried to hang in there, and I’ve tried to come back and play the great game of golf again.”
The Presidential Medal of Freedom is the highest distinction that a citizen can earn. The award is given to those who have made “an especially meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, cultural or other significant public or private endeavors.”
Woods is very deserving of the award. He has overcome a lot, professionally and personally, and embodies the American tradition of perseverance.
Wood’s troubles began in 2009 when he was caught in an infidelity scandal and later divorced his wife, Elin Nordegren, in 2010.
Woods was inconsistent in the years that followed — although he did have a solid year in 2013, winning five times. He returned to his perch as the No. 1 player in the world.
However, the stint at the top wouldn’t last very long; he suffered from multiple back and leg injuries that were so severe they threatened his ability to walk.
During a 10-year stretch, he had four major knee surgeries and two major back surgeries. The last operation — in 2017 — required a spinal fusion operation, which led him to abuse prescription drugs. Woods was arrested for driving under the influence of five different drugs, and his mugshot was plastered on websites and TVs worldwide.
Woods and Trump have been friends for years. In February, Trump played golf with Tiger and Jack Nicklaus at his course in Jupiter, Florida.
After playing with Woods, Trump predicted that Tiger would win another Major. He tweeted, “Everyone is asking how Tiger played yesterday. The answer is GREAT! He was long, straight & putted fantastically well…Tiger is back & will be winning majors again!”
Woods drew the ire of the leftist mob when he failed to demonize Trump. Woods responded by saying, “Well, he’s the President of the United States and you have to respect the office. And no matter who’s in office, you may like, dislike the personality or the politics, but we all must respect the office.”
Woods’ was attacked for that statement. He was simply saying he respected the office of the presidency. That wasn’t good enough for some in the sports media.
ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith went so far as to claim that Tiger is “not black.” Smith said, “Black Americans haven’t respected that from Tiger for quite some time. They haven’t heard him speak on a plethora of issues pertaining to having a social consciousness on many, many occasions.”
Even Tiger Woods isn’t immune to the leftist mob.
However, he received a Presidential Medal of Freedom, and they haven’t.
