Some say President Trump is the most pro-life president America has ever seen—and he certainly proves them right by the swift action he’s taken to save the most vulnerable among us.
The Trump Administration is coming after state-funded abortion which has long been one of the most important issues of urgent concern to pro-life conservatives.
This week, the US Department of Health and Human Services warned the state of California against their pro-abortion healthcare policy which restricts plans from declining abortion coverage to customers.
The HHS announced they will withhold $200 million dollars in federal funding from Medicaid in the next fiscal quarter “if the state does not come into compliance,” according to NBC.
The government agency will continue to withhold an additional $200 million per fiscal quarter until Medicaid allows private insurance plans to choose whether they will cover abortions or not.
HHS Secretary Alex Azar says that California is violating the Weldon Amendment, a federal law that prevents insurance companies from being required to provide abortion coverage.
California “refused to work with us to take corrective action, so we are now taking action to hold them to account,” Azar said.
“This comes after the Office of Civil Rights investigated a complaint from Catholic and Christian officials alleged that they should not be required to pay for abortions as it violates their religious freedom,” The Hill reported.
Despite this being a huge step in the right direction for protecting religious liberty, California Governor Gavin Newsom condemned the Trump Administration.
“It’s wrong that the Trump Administration would threaten Californians’ health just to score cheap political points – and during a global pandemic,” Newsom argued.
“We will continue to stand up for reproductive health and push back against this extreme presidential overreach,” Newsom vowed.
Newsom just plainly stated that standing up for religious liberty has now been watered down to an attempt “to score cheap political points.”
While it’s not at all surprising coming from, as I like to call him, Dictator Newsom, it is still disturbing that he does not see the value in maintaining the Constitutional rights of religious people.
Not only that, private companies should have the freedom to offer any services they choose. Insurance companies should not be forced to provide a service just because the state says it must.
The Trump Administration did the exact right thing in this situation. A government that stands for freedom should defund any state that violates that fundamental right on any level – let alone multiple.
Maybe this will be the wakeup call California desperately needs when it comes to what it means to guarantee freedom for all citizens regardless of religious beliefs.
