Becoming the first union to publicly do so, the American Postal Workers Union (APWU), representing hundreds of thousands of postal workers, has released a statement in opposition to Biden’s upcoming COVID-19 vaccine mandate for federal employees.
In a statement released Wednesday, the APWU made it clear they believe their employees should be allowed the personal freedom to decide whether to get the vaccine or not.
Currently, about 570,000 Americans work for the U.S. Postal Service according to 2020 data, Reuters reported. This is roughly a quarter of all federal employees Biden’s impending vaccine requirement would affect.
“Various media outlets have reported that the White House is considering mandatory COVID-19 vaccination as a condition of employment for federal employees,” the APWU wrote in the statement.
“Maintaining the health and safety of our members is of paramount importance. While the APWU leadership continues to encourage postal workers to voluntarily get vaccinated, it is not the role of the federal government to mandate vaccinations for the employees we represent,” the union asserted.
Instead of accepting the federal government’s edicts, the APWU demands that these matters “be negotiated” directly with the APWU.
“Issues related to vaccinations and testing for COVID-19 in the workplace must be negotiated with the APWU. At this time the APWU opposes the mandating of COVID-19 vaccinations in relation to U.S. postal workers,” the APWU concluded.
Biden reportedly plans to announce a federal vaccine mandate on Thursday afternoon for the 2.18 million civilian federal employees, including government contractors, CNN first reported on Tuesday.
However, an official familiar with the matter maintains it will not be a “mandate” as it will not be a condition of employment. Although employees who do not comply will be subject to routine testing, social distancing, mask-wearing, and other restrictions that those who are vaccinated will not be required to adhere to.
Hopefully, the APWU is the first of many large labor unions to take a stand against government overreach and oppose forcing Americans to receive a vaccine.
