“Never let a good crisis go to waste.”
This seems to have become the Liberal mantra during times of peril. Former Obama Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel established that doctrine during the financial crisis in 2009 as a way for the Democrats to pass a stimulus bill that would include a Christmas list of Liberal presents. They wanted to use the crisis as a way to transform American society by advancing their policy agenda.
In many ways, they got their wish…and now they’re at it again.
This time, they are holding the American worker hostage during the present Covid-19 crisis. Dems have been fighting against legislation that would provide relief to American businesses and workers, and they aren’t hiding their true intentions. South Carolina Democrat James Clyburn has said that the crisis provides “a tremendous opportunity to restructure things to fit our vision.”
For a time, it appeared that the Democrats were going to go along with the Republicans to pass a bipartisan stimulus package to prevent an economic recession…that is, until her majesty Nancy Pelosi flew in from California and nuked the negotiations.
Pelosi Makes Demands
Pelosi announced that she would be introducing her own legislation filled with Liberal goodies. She made her lackey Chuck Schumer kow-tow to her wishes and the Senate Democrats voted to block debate on the proposed stimulus legislation.
Writing for USA Today, James Robbins writes that Empress Pelosi wants the following Liberal policies to be included in the bill:
“It imposes racial and gender pay equity provisions, diversity on corporate boards, increased use of minority-owned banks by federal offices, and a grab-bag of other diversity-themed requirements. It increases the collective bargaining power for unions and cancels all the debt owed by the US Postal Service to the US Treasury. For the global warming crowd, there are increased fuel emission standards and required carbon offsets for airlines, plus tax credits for alternative energy programs. For the kids, there is a provision for student loan payment deferment, and for the education bureaucrats who overcharge them a $9.5 billion giveaway to colleges and universities. It gives $100 million to juvenile justice programs, and suspends various aspects of enforcement of immigration laws.”
But wait, there’s more:
“Perhaps the most troubling sections of the bill are under the rubric ‘American Coronavirus/COVID–19 Election Safety and Security’ or ‘ACCESS’ Act. This section would impose requirements on states for early voting, voting by mail, required mailing of absentee ballots to everyone, ballot harvesting (i.e., having third parties deliver absentee ballots), online voter registration, same-day registration, and other practices which undermine confidence in the integrity of the ballot. In these days of increasing threats to election security, we should be moving rapidly back to in-person paper ballots, but this bill would be a radical step in the wrong direction.”
Diversity quotas, Green New Deal provisions, and re-writing election laws have nothing to do with the current coronavirus pandemic. As Americans live in fear over their health and job security, Pelosi and the Democrats want to deny Americans relief by selfishly pushing their unrelated agenda.
Of course, as always, the Democrats received cover from their allies in the media. The New York Times changed its headline on the story three times yesterday. The first headline read “Democrats Block $1.7 Trillion Stimulus Bill,” which was actually truthful…and that is why they felt pressured to change it. Each headline got progressively worse, straying further and further from the truth. The next headline read: “Democrats Blocked $1.7 Trillion Stimulus Bill, Citing Worker Concerns.” Of course, the Democrats were concerned about the workers. That is the reason they blocked the legislation. However, the New York Times wasn’t satisfied with that headline either. They changed the headline once again, this time to read “Partisan Division Halts Discussion of the Bill.”
They finally got it just right. Now, the Democrats have been relieved of all responsibility for the bill’s failure.
To follow up, the NYT editorial board then ran an absurd Op-Ed this morning that put the blame for the legislation’s failure at the feet of the Republicans. The headline read: “The Coronavirus Bailout Stalled. And It’s Mitch McConnell’s Fault.” Once again, the New York Times is regurgitating Democrat talking points. They are living in denial. It is obvious to any honest observer that the blame for the failure rests solely with Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats.
Blaming The Republicans
Pray tell, New York Times: Why is it McConnell’s fault? They wrote, “Mr. McConnell emerged on Sunday evening with a bill that would provide a lot of help for corporate executives and shareholders, and not nearly enough for American workers. It would let the Treasury Department hand out hundreds of billions of dollars to corporations — potentially including businesses owned by President Trump — without requiring a binding commitment to preserve jobs and wages. And the bailouts could remain secret for six months.”
Once again, the Times condemns corporations without understanding how business works. Businesses need a revenue stream that is greater than their costs, otherwise they will need to cut those costs, which often includes laying off or firing workers. McConnel and the Republicans are trying to prevent that from happening. It is basic business 101, but apparently, this is too difficult for the New York Times editorial board and the Democrats to grasp.
As long as the Democrats refuse to address the economic reality and put their selfish wants ahead of the needs of American workers and businesses, the likelihood of economic misery will grow greater by the day.
