High-level Democrats, including former President Barack Obama, are predictably calling for sweeping gun control measures following two senseless shootings in Colorado and Georgia.
What Democrats don’t seem to understand is that America doesn’t have a gun problem – it has a mental health problem.
Mental health, alongside human trafficking, is one of the most ignored issues Americans suffer from as we struggle to grapple with solutions.
The truth is, we don’t have a system in place for people who are mentally ill, so we wait until things escalate out of control. Only when it’s too late, and only after lives are lost, do politicians like Obama start calling for change.
But when they do take notice, it’s not to reform how we handle mental illness in this country – rather, they go for our guns.
Describing feelings of “familiar outrage,” Obama called for gun control in response to the two mass shootings which resulted in at least 18 people losing their lives.
“It is long past time for those with the power to fight this epidemic of gun violence to do so,” the former president said in a statement.
Although, “it will take time to root out the disaffection, racism, and misogyny that fuels so many of these senseless acts of violence,” he argues, “we can make it harder for those with hate in their hearts to buy weapons of war.”
Obama said America can and must overcome “cowardly politicians” and organizations like the NRA who “oppose any limit on the ability of anyone to assemble an arsenal.”
“A once-in-a-century pandemic cannot be the only thing that slows down mass shootings in this country…this is a normal we can no longer afford,” the former president added.
However, what he leaves out is the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, which states as clear as day, “A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed.”
Shall not be infringed, it reads.
Calling for more gun control laws is not only unconstitutional, but it will not solve the problem of mass shootings in America.
The simplest explanation for this is: Criminals don’t follow the law.
If they did, Chicago wouldn’t have sky-high gun-related homicide numbers being that it has some of the toughest gun control laws in the country.
Furthermore, in places like Britain that have strict gun laws, violent attacks didn’t stop. Criminals simply obtain guns illegally or find other objects to assault people with, leading to an explosion in stabbings and acid attacks.
Instead of permanently ending mass shootings, gun control leaves innocent people defenseless from criminals who don’t follow laws.
Yet, Democrats repeatedly use these tragic events to call for stricter gun laws to disarm us anyway. Thankfully, being that American citizens possess about 46 percent of the world’s citizenry-owned guns, the Democrats may run into a few problems when it comes to taking those away.
