There are members of the Obama administration who won’t be sleeping well tonight, and for good reason.
The investigation into the origins of the now-infamous Russia probe has taken a turn from a basic investigation and crossed the Rubicon into a full-on criminal investigation.
U.S. Attorney John Durham has been leading the investigation into the origins of the Russia investigation which made unproven allegations of collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russians in 2016.
Durham has been investigating the roles members of the intelligence community played in the investigation during the Obama years, determining if possible criminal behavior might have taken place.
The New York Times reported that “Mr. Durham has indicated he wants to interview former officials who ran the C.I.A. in 2016 but has yet to question either Mr. Brennan or James R. Clapper Jr., the former director of National Intelligence. Some C.I.A. officials have retained criminal layers in anticipation of being interviewed.”
Good decision. They’re going to need all the legal advice they can get.
The story has gotten even juicier with the revelations that Attorney General Barr and Durham were presented with incriminating evidence when they were in Italy recently.
The Daily Beast reported that the two were “interested in what the Italian secret service knew about Joseph Mifsud, the erstwhile professor from Malta who had allegedly promised then-candidate Donald Trump’s campaign aide George Papadopoulos he could deliver Russian ‘dirt’ on Hillary Clinton.”
The Report continued: “The Italian justice ministry’s public records show that Mifsud had applied for police protection in Italy after disappearing from Link University, where he worked and, in doing so, had given a taped deposition to explain just why people might want to harm him. A source in the Italian Ministry of Justice, speaking on the condition of anonymity, told the Daily Beat that Barr and Durham were played the tape.”
This stuff is straight out of a spy novel. It is hard to fathom that this is real life.
The bad news for the Obama administration officials didn’t end here.
Another investigation into how the FISA warrant used to spy on the Trump campaign was obtained has been completed by Inspector General Michael Horowitz.
The draft of the report has been turned in to Attorney General Barr and is in the declassification stage.
From what has been publicly reported, the Obama Administration National Security apparatus should be very concerned.
Fox News reported “For more than a year and a half, Inspector General Michael Horowitz has been investigating alleged misconduct related to the FISA warrants delivered by the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISC). The Justice Department and FBI obtained warrants in 2016 to surveil Trump adviser Carter Page. It is unclear, at this point, if Page was the only Trump official that the DOJ obtained a FISA warrant against.
That highly-anticipated report will likely spark new congressional investigations and deliver critical information to other federal reviews probing allegations of abuse by the Justice Department and the FBI.”
Of course, The New York Times and other mainstream outlets have spun the story to fit their narrative that Trump is ordering these investigations be made public so he can draw attention away from the Ukraine Impeachment inquiry. They also are claiming that he is doing this to settle political scores from 2016.
Regardless of how the media tries to spin the story, the truth is the truth, and the Obama administration could be about to face its day of reckoning.
