I am glad that our Forefathers defeated the British crown. We are monarch-free here in America, and that’s fine by me. A monarchy is antithetical to the republican form of government that we treasure as Americans.
That is why it has always befuddled me that Americans seem so fascinated with the British Royal Family. Take a walk down any grocery store check-out lane in America and you will be exposed to the latest tabloid headlines about the Royals. Entire television and documentary series— including Netflix’s “The Crown”—are dedicated to the personal and public lives of the British Royal family.
Now, two of the members are leaving the family. In a shocking, unprecedented move, Prince Harry and Princess Meghan Markle have announced that they are stepping back as senior members of the British Royal Family.
Seriously? Is that even possible?
Then again, it’s not like they had actual important jobs to do anyway…and that right there is why modern-day royalty is such a joke. They are really good at photo-ops and creating drama. That’s about it.
The couple released the following statement:
“We have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution. We intend to step back as senior members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen. It is with your encouragement, particularly over the last few years, that we feel prepared to make this adjustment.”
“We now plan to balance our time between the United Kingdom and North America, continuing to honor our duty to The Queen, the Commonwealth, and our patronages,” they continued. “This geographic balance will enable us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter, including the launch of our new charitable entity.”
Life must be difficult for them, having to sit through long handshake and photo-op lines. Living in a royal palace must be tough work. Who could blame them for leaving?
The couple originally wanted to flee England for the United States. However, there is one problem: Donald Trump is president.
In follow-up statements, the couple announced that they won’t move to the United States until Trump is no longer president. Something tells me he isn’t going to step down as president to accommodate their travel arrangements.
The Daily Mail reported that an anonymous source told them that “the couple plans to live in Canada to start off, [but] their goal is to eventually have a home or business in Los Angeles.” According to the source, once Trump is gone; they will be moving to the west coast.”
I want Trump to be reelected even more now. Maybe we can amend the Constitution so that he can run for another term after as well. Anything to keep British royalty out of the US.
There clearly is a big market for royal news in this country. Maybe it’s because people like to live vicariously through their exploits. They can have the royal drama without actually having to subsidize them with their taxpayer money.
I am happy that we have a strong alliance with Great Britain. However, I am also glad we don’t have their silly royal family.
No disrespect, England, but I personally think Brexit news is much more interesting.
