Violence has been present in Chicago ever since the very birth of the Windy City.
From the removal of the Potawatomi that once inhabited the lands to the Great Fire of 1871 to the Capone era to the crime-ridden Cabrini Green gang violence of the 80s and 90s, violence seems to be intertwined with the core of the Second City.
That being said, Chicago remains an incredible place. If you’ve never been there, do yourself a favor and schedule a visit—the food and the atmosphere are equally incredible.
However, much like many other cities around the country, there are parts that seem to be laden with crime more than the rest of the city—and that goes double for Chicago.
While the Cabrini Green projects have been torn down, the gang violence has not allowed the city to rest.
While there was a lull during the ought, the fact remains that shootings and deaths dropped from 70% in 1991 down to 34% in 2011…
Which is an improvement to be sure – but still a very high rate compared to other cities in America.
However, since then, the murder, homicide, and shooting rates have all begun to climb in the Windy City once again.
Why Has Crime Gotten WORSE In Chicago?
A lot of people—especially Chicagoans—feel that the strict gun control laws that the city officials continue to pile onto the population is one of the biggest contributors to this crime rate.
Those in charge seem to forget that an armed society tends to be a well-behaved society.
But in Chicago, it’s harder for a law-abiding citizen to buy a firearm than it is for a criminal to get one…
And as the old adage goes, “When guns are outlawed, only outlaws have guns.”
But that’s not how the current Mayor of Chicago, Lori Lightfoot, feels…
In fact, she doesn’t think the violence and crime in her city is due to Chicagoans at all. She thinks it all lands squarely on the shoulders of other people.
During a recent appearance on CNN’s State of the Union, host Jake Tapper asked Lightfoot how she felt about Trump’s recent comments about how the federal government could help solve Chicago’s violence.
Lightfoot had this to say:
“It’s Not MY Fault!!!”
“That’s classic Trump hyperbole. I sent him a letter on Monday outlining the very specific things that the federal government is unqualified to help with starting with common-sense gun control. The fact of the matter is our gun problem is related to the fact that we have too many illegal guns on the street. 60% of which, 60% of which come from states outside of Illinois. We are being inundated with guns from states that have virtually no gun control, no background checks, no ban on assault weapons. That is hurting cities like Chicago. That is the thing that if the president wanted to help and the other things I identified in my letter he could do today, tomorrow, but he is not really interested in helping in that way.”
Is Lightfoot saying that these people are driving out of state and illegally buying guns to bring back to Chicago?
But a simple Google search of the six states closest to Illinois—Wisconsin, Iowa, Missouri, Kentucky, Indiana, and Michigan—ALL do the mandatory background checks that federal law requires.
So, what’s she talking about?
It’s nothing more than a way to try and excuse the violence that’s been going on in her city for decades, if not centuries.
You want to fix Chicago?
Make it easier for the good guys to get and carry guns…
Their draconian gun laws make it damn near impossible for law-abiding citizens to protect themselves and their city from crime – so, loosen the restraints and let good people arm themselves.
It won’t turn in to the Wild West…
It’ll be more like every other city that allows people to not be victims.
But isn’t that like a Dem?
Blame everybody else for the problems you’ve had for years?
Chuck Schumer’s been in office for 45 years, Joe Biden for 51, Pelosi for 33, Maxine Waters for 47 and Dianne Feinstein for 60 years…
Yet all of them want to blame Trump (who’s been in office for three and a half years) for the same problems they’ve been facing for DECADES.
It’s like a broken record with these people…
And Lightfoot is no different.
She’s blaming the surrounding states and Trump for her problems too…
Imagine how awesome this country could be if they accepted just a little bit of responsibility?
“Too often in life, something happens and we blame other people for us not being happy or satisfied or fulfilled. So the point is, we all have choices, and we make the choice to accept people or situations or to not accept situations.” – Tom Brady
