On Tuesday, MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell taught a masterclass on how to properly deliver fake news.
On his program, he claimed that Russian oligarchs had signed off on business loans for Donald Trump.
According to O’Donnell’s report, a source that worked for Deutsche Bank told him that the Russians signed off on Trump’s loans, but provided no evidence to corroborate his claim.
On the show, he said, “The source close to Deutsche Bank said that the co-signers of Donald Trump’s Deutsche Bank loans are Russian billionaires close to Vladimir Putin. If true, that would be a significant factor in Vladimir Putin’s publicly stated preference for presidential candidate Donald Trump over presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.”
Except this wasn’t true…or, at least, it hasn’t been corroborated.
How do we know this?
Because Lawrence O’Donnell admitted it himself.
Lawrence O’Donnell Admits He Was Wrong
In a classic example of “too little, too late,” O’Donnell admitted he was wrong to have reported the story without doing his due diligence to make sure that the story was actually correct.
He should have thought about that before he opened his mouth and caused social media to freak out. The Russian Oligarch/Trump loan story was the number one trending story on Twitter for almost 24 hours.
CBS News reported, “O’Donnell quickly tweeted that he made an ‘error in judgment’ reporting the story.
‘We don’t know whether the information is inaccurate,’ he said later on the air. ‘But the fact is we do know it wasn’t ready for broadcast and for that I apologize.’
He later apologized on-air, again saying the story ‘wasn’t ready for broadcast.’”
This story perfectly encapsulates the state of the mainstream media today.
They can just throw out any claim they want without backing up the story with evidence.
They have done this time and time again.
We Can’t Trust The Media
Last year, the media performed garbage reporting during the Brett Kavanaugh sexual assault hoax.
They reported accusations from Christine Blasey Ford and others that accused Kavanaugh of sexual assault and rape while finding no other sources besides the accusers who could back up the story.
They helped destroy the reputation of a good man, and they have never been held accountable for their reckless behavior.
The media reported endlessly on the Trump-Russian hoax. The New York Times won Pulitzer Prizes for their inaccurate reporting on the story.
When the Mueller Report was released, they failed to acknowledge that they were wrong; instead, they pivoted to framing Trump as a racist by publishing a series of essays about slavery and racism that was meant as a way to bash America and Trump.
White House Press Secretary Stephanie Grisham said, “This is one of the reasons that a majority of Americans have lost trust in the media. Instead of applying ethics and standards to their reporting, journalists and Left-wing outlets have weaponized the media, using it to attack and harass people with little to no regard for the truth.”
As time goes along, it appears that President Trump may be correct: the media REALLY IS the enemy of the people.
Lawrence O’Donnell is one of them.
