Last week the Florida State Legislature voted to allow teachers the option of arming themselves in the classroom.
This comes on the heels of last year’s mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.
In the wake of the horrific shooting, anti-gun activists descended on the Sunshine State to push for gun control measures. Activists filled the halls of the state’s capitol in Tallahassee, demanding action on gun control.
The campaign went national when students from Parkland helped organize the “March for Our Lives,” which featured a large demonstration for gun control in Washington, D.C.
The anti-gun lobby set the narrative for the national debate: If you want to protect students, you have to support gun control.
Republicans in the Florida Legislature fought back against the leftist narrative.
Governor Ron DeSantis Signs Bill Allowing Teachers to Carry Guns in Class
The legislature placed the safety of students first by passing a bill that will allow teachers to carry firearms in the classroom.
Students are safer now because of the legislation. Logic dictates that a shooter with a gun will kill more people when there isn’t a gun pointed right back at them. If someone points a gun at your forehead, wouldn’t you want to have one pointed at their forehead?
I know I would.
Over 90% of shootings nationwide are carried out in gun-free zones.
Why would a shooter go into a room with an armed defender when they could go into a room with no chance of anyone shooting back at them?
Fox News reported, “The new law expands an existing school ‘guardian’ program and allows any teacher to volunteer to carry a weapon if his or her school district approves. Would-be volunteers must undergo at least 144 hours of police-style training, psychiatric evaluation and drug screening.”
The new law also contains a number of other school safety measures, such as wider disclosure of certain student mental health records and mental screenings of troubled students. It also mandates greater reporting of school safety and student discipline incidents, and a requirement that law enforcement officials be consulted about any threats.”
This is what an actual solution to school shootings looks like. I hope other states are watching what is happening in Florida.
Of course, there are those on the Left who oppose the law.
Fox News reported that “the bill was opposed by most Democrats and teachers’ unions, which argued that the introduction of more weapons in schools would place children at risk, increase the dangers of mistaken shootings and lead to more violence against African-American students because of the inherent biases.”
There it is … the race card.
The Republicans passed legislation to protect students because they are racist.
Try to follow that logic.
The Left has absolutely no proof that this legislation would lead to more deaths of African Americans because of white teachers.
They don’t care. They will just make up “facts” as they go along. They are good at it.
Regardless of what the Democrats say, this was a good day for school safety. I applaud the Florida Legislature.
