Florida is now the seventh state to outlaw transgender athletes from competing with biological girls in school sports after Governor Ron DeSantis signed a bill designed to protect women’s sports.
DeSantis signed the long-awaited “Fairness in Women’s Sports Act” into law on Tuesday morning during a signing ceremony held at Trinity Christian Academy in Jacksonville, Fla.
“In Florida, girls are going to play girls’ sports and boys are going to play boys’ sports. That’s what we’re doing,” said the governor speaking to students and their parents.
Despite the Biden administration’s executive order forcing public schools to allow transgender students to play in any sports league and use any restroom they want, regardless of their biological sex, DeSantis said his bill “will ensure fairness for women’s athletes.”
“Athletic teams or sports that are dedicated to females are open to females,” the governor added. “And we’re going to go based off biology not based off ideology when we’re doing sports.”
The bill specifically defines biological sex “based on the individual’s birth certificate at the time of birth.”
Florida’s new law will also enable students to take legal action if they lose out on an “athletic opportunity” due to a school’s noncompliance with the legislation.
“Any student who is deprived of an athletic opportunity as a result of violation of this law will have a right to civil remedies,” DeSantis revealed.
Announcing the bill’s signing on Twitter, the governor said, “The Fairness in Women’s Sports Act will empower Florida women & girls to be able to compete on a level playing field. This will help ensure that opportunities for things like college scholarships will be protected for female athletes for years to come.”

The “Fairness in Women’s Sports Act” originally passed the Florida legislature in April, Breitbart reported.
Florida is the latest state in addition to Alabama, Arkansas, Idaho, Mississippi, Tennessee, and West Virginia, to sign legislation protecting girls’ sports and opposing Biden’s transgender initiative.
