Five years ago, in Ferguson, Missouri, a white police officer shot and killed an 18-year old black man, leading to riots in the streets and national outrage against the officer.
The police officer was named Darren Wilson and the 18-year old black man was named Michael Brown.
At the time, the media reported that Brown had his hands up and facing Wilson, shouting “don’t shoot” before Wilson fired.
If the shooting happened that way, then it would be a true tragedy, and the outrage would be justified.
The problem is that that’s not what happened.
The Obama Department of Justice found insufficient evidence to charge Wilson, and if any administration would be looking to charge officer Wilson, it would be Obama’s.
Those facts didn’t stop many on the Left from lying publicly about the incident. Now, all these years later, they are still perpetuating a lie about the shooting.
2020 Dems Weigh In
Even the 2020 Democratic presidential candidates have hopped on board the bandwagon.
Here are a few of their statements.
Cory Booker tweeted: “5 years ago, Michael Brown was killed by a police officer…I have been thinking all day about Mike and his family, and my prayers are with them. I am also thinking about the everyday citizens who stood against the police violence and racism and were tear-gassed for their patriotic acts. Ferguson called to the conscience of our nation and inspired a movement that rightly continues.”
Kirsten Gillibrand tweeted: “5 years ago, a Ferguson police officer killed Michael Brown, an unarmed teenager. He shot him 6 times. Nothing will bring Michael back, but we can’t stop fighting the injustice done to his family and so many others.”
Congressman Tim Ryan wrote: “Five years since the tragic death of Michael Brown and we still have significant work to do. We must rebuild trust between police and the communities they have sworn to protect.”
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said: “Michael Brown should be here today. My city knows the pain of Ferguson all too well…NO ONE should die due to the color of their skin.”
Beto O’Rourke tweeted: “Five years ago, Michael Brown was shot dead by a police officer…We are reminded of an idea as urgent, and as ignored, today as it was when Michael was killed: Black Lives Matter.”
Bernie Sanders wrote: “Michael Brown should be alive today. Five years after his death, we must finally end police violence against people of color.”
Senator Kamala Harris tweeted: “Michael Brown’s murder forever changed Ferguson and America. His tragic death sparked a desperately needed conversation and a nationwide movement. We must fight for stronger accountability and racial equity in our justice system.”
Senator Elizabeth Warren tweeted: “5 years ago Michael Brown was murdered by a white police officer in Ferguson, Missouri. Michael was unarmed yet he was shot 6 times. I stand with activists and organizers who continue the fight for justice for Michael. We must confront systemic racism and police violence head-on.”
What do all those comments have in common?
They are all LIES!
Here’s What Really Happened
Emmy award-winning journalist Sharyl Attkisson reported that officer Wilson had “acted in self-defense. Brown, the report said, had reached into the police vehicle and grabbed Officer Wilson by the neck. And Brown appeared to be lunging toward Officer Wilson when Officer Wilson shot him in self-defense.”
The DOJ report found that contrary to previous assertions, Michael Brown didn’t have his hands up in the air saying “don’t shoot.” Instead, he charged Officer Wilson and tried to grab him out of his police car when Wilson fired in self-defense.”
Warren’s claim that there is systemic racism against minorities is statistically false.
There are, of course, isolated incidents, and those should be condemned, but the facts don’t back up her claim.
Heather Mac Donald, author of the book War on Cops cited the following statistics in her book. She wrote:
“ In 2015, a police officer was 18.5 times more likely to be killed by a black male than an unarmed black male was to be killed by a police officer. Black males have made up 42 percent of all cop-killers over the last decade, though they are only 6 percent of the population. That 18.5 ratio undoubtedly worsened in 2016, in light of the 53 percent increase in gun murders of officers—committed vastly and disproportionately by black males. Among all homicide suspects whose race was known, white killers of blacks numbered only 243. “
The Dems are not entitled to their own facts. The facts prove they are wrong, however, they continue to not tell the truth about race relations in this country.
Their lies about the Ferguson shooting are a reminder of how low they are willing to go.
