When they aren’t canceling Thanksgiving and putting New Yorkers out of work by shutting down the state’s economy, Governor Andrew Cuomo and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio are keeping themselves busy by closing down the largest school system in the nation.

Mayor de Blasio has ordered the New York City school system of one million students to cease in-class learning and revert to learning virtually. He is basing his decision on an absurd benchmark of a 3% positivity rate among students. That is an incredibly arbitrary number.

The New York Post reported, “New York City public schools close as of today, with no sign of when or even if they’ll reopen this year — or even of what might determine it. Parents can, should and will blame the woeful incompetence of Mayor Bill de Blasio and Schools Chancellor Richard Carranza, as well as the conniving of the United Federation of Teachers.

Back when he was getting the UFT’s assent to any reopening at all, de Blasio bound himself to an absurd benchmark for a total shutdown: a 3 percent seven-day rolling citywide average of positive virus tests.

This is utterly unscientific and arbitrary: Testing says little about what’s happening with serious virus cases, and next to nothing about what’s going on in New York’s schools — where kids and staff alike are seeing far lower positive test rates.”

This is nothing short of child abuse!

By keeping students locked in their homes and away from their peers, de Blasio and Cuomo are inhibiting the youth from developing during these critical years of their lives, which could harm them for the rest of their lives.

Even the American Association of Pediatrics agrees and is urging schools to reopen. They released the following statement:

“The AAP strongly advocates that all policy considerations for the coming school year should start with a goal of having students physically present in school. The importance of in-person learning is well-documented, and there is already evidence of the negative impacts on children because of school closures in the spring of 2020. Lengthy time away from school and associated interruption of supportive services often results in social isolation, making it difficult for schools to identify and address important learning deficits as well as child and adolescent physical or sexual abuse, substance use, depression, and suicidal ideation. This, in turn, places children and adolescents at considerable risk of morbidity and, in some cases, mortality.”

Liberals are always telling us to follow the science, so if that is the case, then schools should reopen.

Daniel Horowitz cited studies conducted in England and Switzerland that show that students are not transmitters of COVID. He wrote, “Switzerland opened its schools after failing to find a single case of child-to-adult transmission, instead positing that adults are the ones who transmit to children. The country has even advised that children under 10 can safely hug their grandparents. ‘Children are very rarely infected and do not pass on the virus,’ said Dr. Daniel Koch, the head of the infectious diseases unit at the Federal Office of Public Health in Bern, last week. ‘That is why small children pose no risk to high-risk patients or grandparents.’

A UK study from the Royal College of Pediatrics found that, at the very least, children ‘do not play a significant role’ in spreading the virus: A 9-year-old British boy who contracted the virus in the French Alps failed to pass on the virus to a single one of the 170 people he was in contact with.”

Despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary, Bill de Blasio and Andrew Cuomo are shutting down the schools and depriving students of vital years in their personal development.

It is time for New Yorkers to wake up and vote these inept leaders out of office. New York students deserve better.
