For the last 115 years, Americans have been celebrating Columbus Day…
But it wasn’t until 1971 that it became a nationally-observed holiday and morphed from being a day celebrated mostly by Italians (called “Dia de la Raza” or Day of the Race) to a day when Americans celebrated the discovery of the Americas by Europeans.
Since then, information has emerged proving that Christopher Columbus wasn’t the first European to discover the New World; Scandinavian explorers found the land almost half a century BEFORE the Italians did.
Many Americans grew up believing that Christopher Columbus discovered the landmass that would become the United States – and that celebrating his discovery is a uniquely American holiday.
But that may not be the case anymore…
Leftists are trying to rewrite American history by forcing a name change for the holiday we celebrate every second Monday in October.
The Left Wants To ERASE Columbus From History
If Leftists and Liberals get their way – the name will be changed from “Columbus Day” to “Indigenous People’s Day.”
Over the past few years, with the rise of outrage and cancel culture, many Leftists have criticized the actions of Columbus and the other white Europeans that came to the Americas in droves after his discovery was made, focusing especially on the actions that led to the conquering of the indigenous people that were here before them.
Some groups like AIM (the American Indian Movement) have tried making the argument that the perceived ongoing injustices against Native Americans are minimalized by the celebration of a day named after a man who exploited and enslaved their fellow native people.
Even the well-known anthropologist and author Jack Weatherford characterized Columbus Day as the day “…we honor Christopher Columbus, who opened the Atlantic slave trade and launched one of the greatest waves of genocide known in history.”
Of course, that’s not the only criticism of Columbus Day…
As in the 21st Century, colleges and universities have sought to scrutinize every aspect of Columbus’ dealings and each has brought to light that he enslaved many indigenous people and his “discovery” destroyed the once-proud race of Native Americans.
It’s for this treatment of Natives that Leftists think Columbus Day should be changed to Indigenous Peoples Day.
That makes ZERO sense!
There Would Be NO America Without Columbus!
While the Native Americans are an important part of the American story and the entire world’s story—their contributions to our societies have been invaluable, as even our own American government has a base in the Native American councils of the Iroquois—there would be no United States as we know it without Christopher Columbus talking Queen Isabella of Spain into financing the expedition to the New World.
Sure, there would have been some nation here…
And there’s no way of knowing if it would have become the powerful nation that America is today – but what we DO know is that the world is better off because of the United States of America.
And that’s the problem…
Leftists HATE America.
They’ve had it too good for too long and think the freedoms they’re afforded under our Constitution can be done better – but the only way they can change the future is if they change the past first.
They want to rewrite OUR history as evil.
They want to ignore all the good that we’ve done in the world so they can change it to something they see as a better solution.
Don’t let them.
Wish everybody you know a Happy Columbus Day…
It’s an AMERICAN holiday – almost as much as Memorial Day and Independence Day – don’t let them tell you any different.
Columbus may as well be the ORIGINAL founding father of the United States as far as we’re concerned…
Without him – we wouldn’t be here.
