Joe Biden has weighed in with his solution for preventing mass shootings.
It isn’t an original idea,
He wants to ban so-called “assault rifles.”
Although there is no such term in the official nomenclature of guns, it is a term that has been unofficially used by the Left to lump fully-automatic and semi-automatic guns into one giant family.
It is a strategy used by the Left to create a false narrative, stating that shootings could be prevented if only we banned riffles.
However, statistically, this is a false premise.
Most homicides—including mass shootings—are committed using semi-automatic handguns.
But more on that later.
First, here is a taste of Biden’s op-ed published in The New York Times, in which he makes the case for an assault weapons ban.
“We have a huge problem with guns. Assault weapons—military-style firearms designed to fire rapidly—are a threat to our national security, and we should treat them as such. Anyone who pretends there’s nothing we can do is lying—and holding that view should be disqualifying for anyone seeking to lead our country.”
Translation: Anyone who disagrees with Joe is not fit to be president.
He continued: “Many police departments have reported an increase in criminals using assault weapons since 2004. And multiple analyses of the data around mass shootings provide evidence that, from 1994 to 2004, the years when assault weapons and high-capacity magazines were banned, there were fewer mass shootings—fewer deaths, fewer families needlessly destroyed.
There’s overwhelming data showing that shootings committed with assault weapons kill more people than shootings with other types of guns. And that’s the point.
Shooters looking to inflict mass carnage choose assault weapons with high-capacity magazines capable of holding more than 10 rounds. They choose them because they want to kill as many people as possible without having to stop and reload.”
But The Stats Say Differently
Facts are stubborn things, Joe. Here are a few.
According to data published by “Mother Jones,” 50% of the 114 mass shootings committed in the United States from 1982-2019 were committed using only handguns.
“12.2% of the 114 mass shootings committed in the United States from 1982-2019 were committed using only rifles.
24.5% of the 114 mass shootings committed in the United States from 1982-2019 were committed using a mix of handguns and rifles together.
Of the 934 deaths in mass shootings from 1982-2019, 385 (41.2%) happened in shootings in which handguns were the only firearms used.
Of the 934 deaths in mass shootings from 1982-2019, 182(19.4%) happened in shootings in which rifles were the only firearms used.
Of the 934 deaths in mass shootings from 1982-2019, 367 (38.3%) happened in shootings in which a mix of firearms was used.”
The Daily Wire reported that “according to FBI crime statistics from 2013-2107, 66.2% of all gun homicides in the United States were committed using handguns, while just 3.25% were committed using rifles.”
Nowhere in Biden’s op-ed did it acknowledge any of those statistics. It doesn’t fit his anti-gun narrative.
The Left likes to talk about having a dialogue on issues. I agree.
However, the dialogue needs to be fact-based, not based on emotions.
Biden’s plan won’t save lives like he thinks it will; the statistics don’t lie.
