What has happened to Attorney General Bill Barr? The man who has spent much of his tenure as AG trying to expose corruption in the D.C. swamp now appears to be morphing into a swamp creature himself.
This is very disappointing given how he correctly handled the Mueller probe, dropped charges against General Michael Flynn, and opened investigations into the illegal spying operation against the 2016 Trump campaign (although one must wonder why the Durham Report hasn’t been released by now).
But lately, Barr has been acting odd. Recently, he claimed that “the U.S. Justice Department has uncovered no evidence of widespread voter fraud that could change the outcome of the 2020 election,” Barr told the Associated Press (although, to be fair, the DOJ clarified and said investigations were still being conducted).
How can he say that with a straight face? Did he not listen to witnesses who have recently testified about acts of voter fraud they witnessed at state legislative hearings around the country? I realize there has been a media blackout of the hearings, but surely, as Attorney General, he should have been privy to this information.
Now we are finding out that the Attorney General was informed of the recently-announced FBI investigation of Hunter Biden but sought to keep this information from public view, according to the Wall Street Journal. Why would he feel the need to suppress this information?
I assume Barr would counter that he did so as not to interfere in the election. That would be a weak answer given the implications of such an investigation. Americans had a right to know that the son of the Democrat nominee was selling access to his dad and dealing with foreign entities—all without registering as a foreign agent, the same crime for which Paul Manafort was charged— to make millions of dollars.
So, by “not interfering” in the election, Barr was still interfering in the election by not letting the information be known. Barr is a smart man. He should be able to see there is no distinction.
The Wall Street Journal reported the following:
“Attorney General William Barr has known about a disparate set of investigations involving Hunter Biden’s business and financial dealings since at least this spring, a person familiar with the matter said, and worked to avoid their public disclosure during the heated election campaign…
While the investigations in Delaware and Manhattan proceeded, investigators tried to keep the cases out of public view by taking few visible steps in the weeks before the November election, recognizing the impact their work could have, said one of the people familiar with the matter.
Mr. Barr was aware of the investigations involving Hunter Biden before the spring, the person said, though it isn’t clear when or how he first learned of the inquiries.”
As a longtime supporter of Bill Barr, I find this latest news to be disappointing and distressing. Was he just playing us for fools before, or is it something else? Is he trying to position himself for some other role now that it appears that President Trump will no longer be president as of January 20?
I can’t see into Barr’s mind, so I am not going to claim I understand his motive.
All I can do is ask the question: What happened to Bill Barr?
